5The one American state flag comissioned by a kingMar 02, 2006
How many islands make up Hawaii? Of course your answer depends on how big an island has to be in order to be counted as an actual island. But ultimately this one will come down to how many islands the people of Hawaii think they have, and the answer is found in the state flag of the 50th state (and they say television is not educational). This is an interesting flag because it was commissioned not by a state legislature, but rather by King Kamehameha I during the period (1810-93) that Hawaii was an independent kingdom.

The Hawaii state flag has the flag of Great Britain in the upper left corner, honoring Hawaii's friendship with the British. It is also seen as representing a stylized puela, which is a triangular standard laying across two crossed spears (called an alia), which is the symbol of the Hawaiian ali'i. The field consists of eight alternating stripes of white, red, and blue that represent the eight main islands. Combining the Union Jack of Great Britain with the stripes of the U.S. flag was said to have been pleasing to the ships of both nations that called on the islands. When Hawaii became a state in 1959 the flag was adopted as the state flag.

At the start of the 19th century each of the populated Hawaiian Islands was ruled by its own king with the political system administered by ali'i (chiefs) and the religious system headed by kahuna (priests). Then in 1810 Kamehameha, an ambitious young ali'i, got his hands on a small schooner equipped with a cannon. He had also acquired some small arms from European visitors, and consequently was able to take over the island chain from Hawaii to Kauai, establishing a sovereign nation recognized by the major powers. In setting up the government of his kingdom, Kamehameha the Great commissioned the Hawaiian Flag in 1816 and it has represented Hawaii ever since (except for a brief period in 1843 when its independence was challenged by Lord Paulette).

This is a 3 feet by 5 feet version of the Hawaiian state flag (other sizes both larger and smaller can easily be found, right down to one for your desk top). This is a single reverse flag made of durable 100% heavyweight nylon fabric, which has been specially treated to minimize deterioration due to the effects of sun and chemicals. Consequently tit is recommended for outside use, which simply speaks to why so many tourists visit the Hawaiian islands. This Hawaiian flag also features brilliant, fast colors, a strong canvas heading, and a pair of brass grommets that can be used for flying it up those flag poles outside in the wonderful Hawaiian weather.
