The South Dakota flag for citizens of the Mt. Rushmore StateMar 25, 2006
Actually, South Dakota has two official flags. The first, adopted in 1909, had two sides, with the state seal on one side and the sun on the other. Of course, it is expensive to manufacture a double-sided flag, so in 1963 a second design was adopted (and updated in 1992). The state's blue flag now show the state seal surrounded by a sunburst with the words "South Dakota" above and "The Mount Rushmore State" below (the latter being the state's official nickname).
The state seal of South Dakota at the center of the flag was adopted in 1889. It contains symbols of several important South Dakota industries and resources. A farmer plowing a field of corn in the foreground represents agriculture, the cattle grazing on the grasslands represents ranching, and the smelting furnace symbolizes the state's mining industry. At the center of the seal is the Missouri River (just as it the actual river works through the center of the state), with a riverboat steaming along. At the top of the seal is the state motto, "Under God, the people rule."
