The UK Royal Navy ensigns were originally three different colors, red, white and blue, representing three naval squadrons. They took these colors from those of the Union Jack. In 1864 it was decided that the White Ensign was reserved to the Royal Navy. All H.M. ships in commission wear the White Ensign.
